Barbara Gehri has over 25 years of experience in intellectual property law. Her practice focuses on trademark and design law, and she also advises extensively on domain names, company names, unfair competition, and related areas of law.

She advises and represents both domestic and international clients on all aspects of the protection and strategic use of trademarks and designs. Her work covers the full lifecycle of IP rights, including clearance searches and monitoring, filings and portfolio management, as well as responding to office actions and refusals. She also represents clients in contentious matters, such as opposition proceedings, and assists with the enforcement of IP rights, including infringement matters, negotiations, and the drafting of agreements, licence arrangements, and settlement agreements. In addition, her practice includes IP transactions, due diligence, domain name disputes (including UDRP proceedings), and customs enforcement measures.

Barbara has extensive experience in building and managing national and international trademark and design portfolios across a wide range of industries. These include pharmaceuticals and dental, chemicals, banking and insurance, healthcare, retail, film and fashion, food, tourism, public transport, construction, energy, logistics, architecture, as well as machinery, paper, textiles, printing, and the arts. For the international matters of her domestic clients, she works closely with a well-established global network of trusted partner firms.

She represents her clients before the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property (IPI), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and the Swiss Federal Administrative Court. Barbara studied law at the University of Zurich, where she obtained her law degree (lic. iur. / MLaw UZH). Prior to joining freigutpartners as a partner in May 2023, she worked for many years as a trademark attorney—partly in senior and leadership roles—at three leading Swiss IP law firms.

Barbara is president of the Swiss Association of Patent and Trademark Attorneys VSP.

Barbara’s working languages are German, English, and French.
She is based in Zurich.
